Using a Power Sander Safely

sander safetyHey at Best Sander.org we want you to be safe and be the “best sander” (ouch sorry bad pun) you can be over the long term.

All power sanders have the potential to cause serious skin burns if not used correctly. Find a list of common sense safety measures you should take before undertaking your sanding project.

Protect Yourself

No buts, you should always wear safety glasses with side shields or safety goggles for complete eye protection. Sunglasses may look cool but don’t offer enough protection.

Make sure you don’t have any loose fitting clothing, or jewellery and if you have long hair tie it back..

Many power sanders are loud particularly on start up. If you can afford them get noise cancelling headphones the cheaper ear plugs will also work but they aren’t as good or as comfortable.

Many sanders will come with a vacuum hose attachment, or a dust collection bag of their own. Have the dust extracting system turned on and connected to the sander.

Ensure that sanding belts or sanding disk  and paper are not too tight or too loose.

Use the correct grade of abrasive material for the job.

Never force a sander by pushing down on it too hard as this can cause over heating, kickback or stalling.. The weight of the sander  should provide adequate pressure on the work piece

Always use the sander away from the body .

Use a brush to clean away debris from the sanding machines. Do not use your hands.

Never  leave the machine running and ensure that the machine has come to a complete stop before leaving it..
